Laliophobia or lalophobia (from Greek lal, "speech") is the fear of speaking, a social phobia (rational fear). People with this fear worry about speaking because they fear they may fumble over their words, forget their words, stutter, or babble. Fear of speaking in public is known as Glossophobia. Sufferers would avoid getting near people as well as attending any event. One treatment method of laliophobia or glossophobia is self-help.

Laliophobia symptoms

Having glossophobia, or being afraid to speak in public, results in the following physical symptoms:

  • Increased perspiration.
  • Accelerated heart rate
  • Increased blood pressure.
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Sweaty hands
  • Difficulties in articulating
  • Problems making your voice heard
  • Need to drink a lot
  • Nausea and a feeling of panic
