Not to be confused with Hypnophobia, fear of sleep

Cuimianophobia (From Chinese 催眠) is an event/action-based phobia and is the fear of hypnosis and/or being hypnotized. Symptoms of this phobia include aversions to swinging pendulums and moving spirals.

Causes[]

This phobia is often caused by seeing depictions of hypnosis in media, being a hypnotist, or being hypnotized themselves and seeing the effects of such actions. This phobia may relate to another phobia, Archephobia, the fear of being controlled, as well as Somniphobia, the fear of sleep.

Treatment[]

Cuimianophobia is not a very common phobia, as it appears that only 0.000000012% (1/8,212,031,797) of the population has it. However, this can be viewed as a good thing, since it is not a common problem. While hypnosis may not work on sufferers of this phobia, other methods may work, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, self-help techniques, medication, aromatherapy, herbal remedies, etc.
